Information on educational leave in Saarland

Entitlement to educational leave for further professional training

Excerpt from §§ 22 to 32 SWBG

Saarland is one of 12 (of 16) German Länder which provide legally regulated educational leave.

Leave entitlement is granted:

  • for (non-occupational) further training for up to six working days per calendar year, of which paid leave: max. three working days (or five in accordance with the exception in §23 paragraph 1 clause 4: after taking parental leave) provided that the employee exhausts the same number of days of their otherwise entitled general leave (i.e. annual leave, compensatory time, etc.)
  • not before a minimum employment period of 12 months. Entitlement may be transferred to the following year, with the employer’s consent (accruement of entitlements up to two calendar years, no retroactive enforcement). Application no later than 8 weeks, with employer response no later than 4 weeks before training begins.
    Forms to be submitted to employer:
  • Confirmation of course registration, confirmation of course recognition
  • Certificate of attendance
